Music Background: John was first introduced to brass by an old cornet of his father’s left in the bottom of a hall cupboard. After numerous attempts to get a half decent sound from this instrument an eager 10 year old was taken to the learners group at Takapuna City Silver Band bandrooms. After a brief time with the Takapuna Auxiliary Band John quickly achieved promotion to Senior Band moving through the ranks to be become Principal Cornet at the tender age of 15 and leading the band to a National B Grade title in 1982. During this time John also won a number of local competitions and obtained national recognition with selection in the 1982 National Youth band of New Zealand. For the following six years he was regular member of this representative band touring both New Zealand and overseas. National solo success arrived in 1984 when John won the Junior Championship Cornet Title of New Zealand and finished second in the Junior Champion of Champions. Now competing in the open events John only had to wait two years before again tasting national success wining the Open Amateur Cornet title in 1986. As a regular competitor at the National Brass Band Championships in both the elite Championship Cornet and Amateur Cornet classes John has achieved seven podium finishes including winning the Amateur title again in 2007. A real highlight for John was selection firstly in the 1985 National Band of New Zealand that toured the USA for two months, the 2005 National Band that competed at the World Brass Band Championships in Kerkrade, Holland and the 2014 National Band that toured China and Korea.<br> In addition to being an active playing member of North Shore Brass John has also conducted the band on a number of occasions and is currently Band Manager for which he won the title of BBANZ Administrator of the Year in 2008. For his outstanding service John was awarded Life Membership of North Shore Brass in 2003. In 2010 John was elected onto the National Management Committee of the Brass Bands Association of New Zealand and currently holds the position of Vice-President. <br> Outside banding John has both a Bachelor of Engineering degree and post-graduate Management diploma from Auckland University and is Managing Director and major shareholder in Custom Controls Ltd, a medium-sized engineering company with multiple offices round New Zealand.  John is a native of Auckland and is supported by wife Rachel, son Ben and daughters Emily and April.
